What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a ancient Chinese healing art, which has developed and matured over the last 2,000 years.  Various styles have been practiced in many Asian countries for hundreds of years, but it has been practiced in the West only for the last 150 years, and in America since the 1970's.  Acupuncture is one element of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  It involves the insertion of very fine, hair-like needles into specific points, called acupoints, along different channels of the body.  It is at the acupoints where qi, or energy, is accessed.  Energy circulates throughout the body along pathways, called meridians or channels.  When the circulation of energy is disrupted due to an insufficiency, overabundance or blockage, imbalance within the body occurs resulting in potential illness.  Acupuncture works to restore the balance of energy within the body, allowing your body to promote its own healing.
